The Painful Truth

The real impact of neurodiversity and trauma

Some will find this difficult to digest, but here are the statistics

- Autistic people have a life expectancy 20 years or more shorter than the general population, with twice the mortality rate.

- Autistic people experience high rates of co-occurring mental health conditions, and are more likely to commit, or attempt suicide than any other group

- The unemployment rate for Autistic people is 8 times higher than the general population

- Autistic people are more likely to experience homelessness, or enter the judiciary system

- Trauma releases chemicals in the body, which are designed for short release to deal with danger. When these chemicals are released without any control, they have a damaging effect on the internal organs, particularly, the heart. I know I am at high risk of stroke/ heart attack. I vividly remember feeling, and voicing, the feeling my body was working at an unsustainable rate. I was told not to worry.

The body keeps the score
